African stock markets: multiple variance ratio tests of random walks

چکیده

This paper identi®es four categories of formal stock market in Africa: South Africa, medium-sized markets, small new markets which have experienced rapid growth, and small new markets which have yet to take o€ . The hypothesis that a stock market price index follows a random walk is tested for South Africa, ®ve medium-sized markets (Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and Zimbabwe) and two small new markets (Botswana and Mauritius) using the multiple variance ratio test of Chow and Denning (Journal of Econometrics, 58, 385±401, 1993). The hypothesis is rejected in seven of the markets because of autocorrelation of returns. For the South African market, the stock price index follows a random walk. The paper also suggests factors which may contribute to whether or not an equity market follows a random walk.

Weak-form market efficiency in Asian emerging and developed equity markets: Comparative tests of random walk behaviour

This paper examines the weak-form market efficiency of Asian equity markets. Daily returns for ten emerging (China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand) and five developed markets (Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore) are examined for random walks using serial correlation coefficient and runs tests, Augmented Dickey-Ful...

The random walk hypothesis for Chinese stock markets: Evidence from variance ratio tests

This study examines the random walk hypothesis for the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets for both A and B shares, using daily data over the period 1992–2007. The hypothesis is tested with new multiple variance ratio tests – Whang-Kim subsampling and Kim’s wild bootstrap tests – as well as the conventional multiple Chow-Denning test. We find that Class B shares for Chinese stock exchanges do n...

This note examines the weak-form market efficiency of the Australian stock market. Market Development and Efficiency in Emerging Stock Markets

In 1990s emerging stock markets evolved from small and shallow into sizeable and liquid markets integrated with the world financial system. This paper empirically studies the conjecture that the relationship between market development and efficiency can be possibly captured by the weak-form market efficiency tests applied to moving subsample windows. The variance-ratio-based multiple comparison...

Market Efficiency in the Emerging Securitized Real Estate Markets

This paper tests the random walk hypothesis and market efficiency for twelve emerging as well as for four developed securitized real estate markets from 1992 to 2009. Random walk properties of equity prices influence return dynamics, and market efficiency is often considered an essential criterion in the assessment of the functionality of markets and the asset pricing process, which is of signi...
